LISTEN :: Lots of fun stuff for you this episode. We’re going to veer into one of my favourite lanes: pop culture. I don’t know where I get the love I have for pop culture, but it’s big love. Certainly I did not get it from my mum, who couldn’t be more un-plugged and tuned out when it comes to popular mass culture. I was like, “Mum, I’m having Oprah on my show!” and she replied, “I think I know who she is…” Le sigh.
One of the most watched Netflix series right now is American Murder: Gabby Petito, a twisted real life story that made international headlines is now a documentary series I watched last weekend. So many questions about the minds of the boyfriend and his weird parents - that DARK burn letter the mother sent her son? - that we’re going to have friend of the show Dr. Carole Leiberman on to dig into their psyches - and we’ll talk about the death of Gene Hackman and his wife and dog - more weird. News broke earlier this week that Hackman’s wife didn’t die when the coroner said she did. I ask Carole why it is we’re so drawn to celeb stories like this one.
We’re also going to meet a man who has had a life so well lived. David Rothenberg‘s multilayered life has thrust him into Broadway‘s brightest lights, prison riots, political campaigns, civil rights sit-ins, and a Central American Civil War. He was known as the Gay White Hope when he ran for office in NYC. He has a new book out, in which he shares 18 fascinating stories; you’re going to want to meet this incredible man.
But before all that: There is a silent crisis affecting 20-50% of men over forty - and no it’s not erectile dysfunction, though that can be one of the symptoms. No one is talking about it, but we are.
Enjoy the listen.
